Government:Sangamon County is made up of a number of small villages, townships, municipalities and other governing bodies. The two largest governing bodies in Sangamon County are the City of Springfield and Sangamon County. The City of Springfield maintains a Mayoral/Council form of city government which is coordinated by a Mayor who is elected at large, while 10 Aldermen are elected by wards to serve on the City Council. Each elected city official serves a four-year term. Sangamon County, which includes 26 townships, is governed by a 29 member board. The County Board Chairman is elected to a two-year term by the board, while each board member is elected to a four-year term. Other bodies of government in the county include:
Taxing Districts:
In addition, several special purpose units of government serve the
communities of Sangamon County. Because of irregular annexations by
these taxing districts throughout the county, the total levy
applying to any given parcel will vary. Some parcels have been
annexed to more districts than others and will therefore show a
higher overall property tax on an ad-valorem basis. A sample of the
taxes being levied by municipal and special purposed districts in
the greater Springfield area is shown below. Each of the tax rates
shown is applied to each $100 of equalized assessed value (EAV) of
the parcel. In Illinois, EAV is based upon 1/3 of market value,
after exemptions.
