Infrastructure:

Infrastructure, such as an efficient transportation system, reliable utilities and a speedy communication network, drive productivity and economic growth by making it easier, and therefore cheaper, to do business. Investment in infrastructure assists economic expansion by increasing productivity levels and enabling the extraction of more output from a given input of resources.

Transportation – Businesses in Springfield and Sangamon County benefit from a well-maintained transportation network that connects area producers with their markets. Sangamon County is located near the population and geographic center of the country, which enhances the cost effectiveness across all modes of transportation.

Utilities – Sangamon County is served by a collection of private and public utilities, with the two largest being City, Water, Light & Powe, owned and operated by the City of Springfield, and Ameren.

  • Natural Gas: All commercial and residential customers in Springfield and much of the balance of Sangamon County are provided natural gas service by AmerenCILCO

  • Water: CWLP supplies the urban area and nine surrounding communities and public water districts with water from Lake Springfield, a 6.6 square mile man-made lake. Visit the CWLP website for additional information on water rates and processes.

  • Wastewater Disposal: The Springfield Metropolitan Sanitary District provides wastewater collection and treatment services for the City of Springfield, five adjacent villages and other unincorporated areas. Click here for detailed rate information.

  • Solid Waste Disposal: Several private disposal services operate in Springfield/Sangamon County.

  • Pipelines: Several major natural gas pipelines of Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. intersect Sangamon County in both north-south and east-west directions. An additional pipeline from Rockies Express is currently in the process of being constructed.

  • Telecommunications: Voice, data and internet services are available from a number of local and regional providers. CWLP also maintains an OC-12 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network that provides communication speeds in excess of 1 billion bits per second.
