Begin Your Work Experience in Sangamon County
High school is a great time to begin getting work experience. Local businesses often hire students 16-18 years old and there are many opportunities for students 14-15 years old with the proper permits. If you're under 18 and looking for your first or second job, check out the list of open positions below.
There are multiple ways to search for opportunities:
- Toggle to Companies instead of Jobs if there's a particular employer you'd like to work for.
- Use the Filters to sort by location, employment type, and more.
- Use the search tool to sort by job title, specific skills (kitchen experience, good with animals, etc) or enter an interactive prompt (I like to work outside with my hands) to see what jobs fit your interests.
- Upload your resume to be matched with openings that fit your skills and experience.

Congratulations, you've been hired! What documents will you need to provide to complete the hiring process?
- If you're 14 or 15 years old, you'll need a work permit. Talk to your guidance counselor at school or have your parent/guardian contact the Illinois State Board of Education at workpermit@isbe.net or call 312-814-2220 to begin that process. There are several documents you'll need, find more details on ISBE's website.
- Proof of Age: you'll need an original copy of your birth certificate, a state issued ID, or US passport.
- Social Security Card: if you need to apply for a replacement, you can do so through the Social Security Administration's website.
- Bank Account Information: most employers offer direct deposit to a checking or savings account. If you don't already have an account with a financial institution, now would be a great time to start one. You'll need a parent or guardian's assistance and specific documentation to do so, contact one of our member banks or credit unions to learn more.
